At Rueger Riley, we work in a lot of different styles, usually based on what our clients love. But Thomas and I have always had a great appreciation for modern architecture. And even though this isn’t one of the styles that Asheville is known for, there are a few modern gems here that reassure us we’re continuing the work of some really wonderful designers.

So what is modern architecture? Modern architecture is defined by clean lines and minimalist interiors that allow a structure to speak for itself. It also highlights building materials instead of covering them up with ornate design. As a city, Asheville is made beautiful by leaning on the beauty that surrounds us to tell our story and reveal what makes us truly special. With so many commonalities, it is no surprise that Asheville has a rich and fascinating history when it comes to modern architecture.

One of Asheville’s most famed architects is J. Bertram “Bert” King, who brought a flurry of well-thought, mid-century modern homes to Asheville. His architectural style was clean and simple, timeless, yet innovative, serene and elegant with beautiful modern detail. He favored the use of wood and stone to blend with western North Carolina’s natural environment. When he was designing his creations he worked tirelessly to find ways to frame the mountain vistas and scenery to “bring the outside in.”

At Rueger Riley, Inc., we appreciate the designs of King, who tackled the misconception that modern design was cold and unwelcoming. His designs were clean, yet frequently and featured elements that are naturally warm and inviting, such as wood and stone. Some of his designs boast floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces, large windows that let in natural light and vaulted post-and-beam ceilings. What could add more character and warmth than these wonderfully modern features? His cutting-edge designs also contained fewer walls — true of most modern designs, today — and created more welcoming open living spaces.

We value the simplicity and beauty of modern architecture and have the skills and the desire necessary to continue building upon Asheville’s modern architecture legacy. Modern architecture eliminates unnecessary design details and focuses more on structural elements and simplicity. We love the hunt of finding the perfect building materials for our clients, be it stone, wood, steel, glass or concrete. When it comes to building commercial and residential structures for our clients, we not only evaluate the structural possibilities, we also look at the environment around the structure and strive “to bring the outside in.”
